Chitrangada Singh (born 28 March 1976[1]) is an Indian film actress.[2] She is best known for starring in Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi (2005) and for her first mainstream commercial film, Desi Boyz (2011).[3] She is married to Indian golfer Jyoti Randhawa.[Chitrangada Singh was born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh to an Indian Army officer(Col Niranjan Singh) in a Jat family.Her brother is golfer Digvijay Singh. She, Digvijay and Tina are the children of an Army Officer. As a girl, she was known for looking like the late actress Smita Patil.[5] "You have outdone Smita Patil," said Shekhar Kapur, when he saw Chitrangda Singh's performance in her debut movie Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003). She received training in Kathak (a classical dance) and enjoyed acting.[It was in a music video of singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, that she was spotted by Sudhir Mishra’s production manager.[7] Subsequently, she made her much acclaimed debut with Sudhir Mishra's film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2003.[10] The role got her wide acclaim: a Washington Post review noted her for giving "her character a deep sense of dignity and decency."[11] After that Chitrangada acted in the 2005 film Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow. Chitrangada made her debut as an item girl in Shirish Kunder's Joker. Also she is to lend her voice to a score in the movie.[12]
She took a break from acting from 2005 to 2008.[13][14] In 2008, she made her comeback with the leading role opposite Sanjay Suri in the director Onir's romantic-comedy, Sorry Bhai!.[5] Its release over the weekend of the Mumbai terror attacks proved disastrous at the box office.[15][16]
In Sudhir Mishra's movie Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011), Chitrangada played the role of an aspiring singer from Delhi who goes to Mumbai to get fame and money. She then starred in Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz, where she played the role of an economics teacher opposite Akshay Kumar. Desi Boyz also starred John Abraham and Deepika Padukone. Chitrangada is brand ambassador for Airtel, Parachute,Puma, Borges Olive Oil, Garnier, Aliva Crackers, Taj Mahal Tea and Joyalukkas Jewellers. She unveiled Tanishq's new collection at Tote in Mumbai on Wednesday 13 Oct 2010 afternoon.[17]
Chitrangada Singh was spotted F Lounge, Lower Parel, Mumbai, for the launch of the latest issue of Women’s Health magazine.[18] She graced the launch of the iconic British brand ‘Burberry’ store at the capital of our India for its niche and elite patrons.[19]
Her latest movie is I, Me Aur Main, which is a directorial debut by Kapil Sharma starring John Abraham and Prachi Desai.Chitrashi had a craze for playing Hockey since childhood, and at the age of 17, began playing as left striker for Uttarakhand state in India. She was picked for the role of a hockey player in the movie Chak De! India by the producers after an audition in Jabalpur. The film turned out to be Blockbuster worldwide, and Chitrashi shot to fame. In 2008, she starred in her second venture, Fashion. The film was a success at the box office, however managed to succeed at critical acclaim. She had a main role in the 2009 action film, Luck opposite superstars Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Shruti Hassan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ravi Kissen and many others. Luck also received critical acclaim, but did average business at the box office.
Her latest films include Yeh Dooriyan and 2012 hit Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya.
Rawat is a former student of the Guru Nanak Academy. Daughter of TS Rawat, a resident of Raipur, Uttarakhand, Chitrashi regularly represents the Uttarakhand hockey team in the national championships. Currently, she is studying at St Andrew FYBMM pursuing her bachelor's degree in mass media. She has campaigned for Minute Maid pulpy orange, along with co-stars Vidya Malvade and Sagarika Ghatge.
She hails from Dehradun. She is also hosting Star Gold's Sabse Favourite Kaun. She was also a contestant in a Comedy Circus 2 of Optimystix. She has acted in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion as Shomu and recently as 'Shortkut' in the 2009 action thriller movie titled Luck. She subsequently participated in Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao, Indian remake of I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!.In 2003, Basu starred in Pooja Bhatt’s thriller, Jism, which was well received by critics and fared well at the box office.[24] She essayed the role of seductive, ambitious wife of a millionaire who indulges in an extramarital affair with an alcoholic lawyer and plots to kill her husband. The film ranked 92 in the top 100 sexiest movie scenes poll conducted by Channel 4.[25] Film critic Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama commented, "...the real show stealer is Bipasha Basu ; her sexy look and seductive deep voice, in contrast with her cold and calculating personality, makes her the most impressive femme fatale since Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi."[26] She received a Filmfare Best Villain Award nomination for Jism. Her next release, Zameen, failed to make impact among audiences.[24]
Basu had four releases in 2004, all of which performed moderately and drew mixed reviews. She collaborated for the second time with Vikram Bhatt in her first release Aetbaar. She played the role of a young woman who falls in love with a psychopath. Rediff.com noted that "...The characters are not convincing, the plot is not fast-paced or interesting."[27] Her next film was Mani Shankar’s Rudraksh which was based on the Indian epic Ramayana. The film was a disaster at the box office and was panned by the critics.[28] She then starred in Rakht as a tarot card reader trying to solve a murder mystery. Critic Shruti Bhasin of Planetbollywood wrote, "Bipasha Basu impresses in a different look and role."[29] Her final release that year was Anil Sharma’s Madhoshi opposite John Abraham.[30] Her performance of a mentally unstable woman was generally well received.[31]
In 2005, she appeared in the love triangle Barsaat alongside Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra. Taran Adarsh commented, "As an actor, she [Bipasha Basu] does show sparks only towards the end."[32] She starred in the Tamil film, Sachein which was a hit and then in Prakash Jha’s Apaharan, which won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay.[33][34] In this period, she refused to act in art films due to salary problems.[35]
Besides acting, Basu did the video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat. She made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video "Stolen.
